Githeio

Githeio, the main harbour of the area, welcomes visitors at the protected northern-west part of Laconian bay. According to mythology, Githeio was established after the end of the fight between Apollo and Hercules for the Delphic tripod, which had been stolen by the latter. Hercules stole the tripod when the priestess of Delphi Oracle Xenokleia, regarding him flagitious for the murder of Ifitos, did not offer him her oracle on how to redeem himself from his illness. Apollo rushed to get back the tripod and there was a huge fight between them. The actual location of the agreement between the two Gods was named “Land of Gods – Gi Theon”, an expression that led to Githeio.

At the archaeological site on the northern part of the city, the main attraction of Githeio is none other than the Ancient Theatre. There are also ruins of the fortifications of the acropolis, as well as minimum remains of structures from Roman Times.
